Snow Day

We had over a foot of snow fall, in just 12 hours, starting late last night. No two flakes are the same, and there are all sorts of types of snow. Some cultures have created specific words for each type of snow, but we have to settle for vibrant verbs and descriptive language.

The last major storm we had was wet, dense, and heavy. The perfect snow for rolling and packing into the frostiest snowman. Today’s snow was interesting because it was two types. The first 10 inches were light and fluffy. Easy to shovel, great for snowboarding, and almost too light for snowshoeing. After we shoveled and plowed our first 10, the back 4 inches were typical of a Spring snowfall: wet, heavy, and dense. After compacting it with our tractor, it was as slick as ice and ready for sledding…ish. We have three wooden sleds, none of which are useable. Basic, I know, but they’re antiques and fragile … just like me. Their main purpose in life is looking good for precisely one season. Luckily, Dave is handy and creative and never met a toy he didn’t want or want to build. He took a an old Telephone pole wrap (shout out to Benno for the suggestion), threw together some twine and some wood with a lil cushy for the tushy, and bingo-bongo! We were ready to fly.

We always remember to carve out some play time among the work, and today was no different. And it wouldn’t be a snow day without some waffles; Homemade, syrup-lathered, and sprinkled with powdered sugar akin to the powder blanketing the ground. If this is the last snow of the season, I think we’ve honored it well. We never wish away a day, but especially on a snow day.
